A very small number of men and women in the United Kingdom are pleased and contented with their working life. Inevitably, huge numbers will just stay there. You've reached this paragraph, which if nothing else suggests that you're considering or may be ready for a change.

It's advisable to get some help before you start - talk to a knowledgeable person; a guide who can really get to know you and find the best job role for you, and analyse the career tracks which will get you there:

* Do you like working on your own or is being in a team environment more important to you?

* Are you considering which market sector you maybe could work in? (In this economy, it's more important than ever to get it right.)

* Having completed your retraining, would you like your new abilities to take you through to retirement?

* Are you confident that your industry training course is commercially viable, and will make it possible to work right up to the time you want to stop?

We ask you to find out more about the computer industry - there are a larger number of positions than staff to fill them, and it's one of the few choices of career where the sector is growing. Despite what some people would have you think, it isn't just geeks looking at screens every day (though naturally some jobs are like that.) Most positions are occupied by average folk who want to earn a very good living.

Understanding the right career development choice is hard enough - so which areas should we be checking out and which questions do we need to be posing?

A so-called advisor who doesn't ask you a lot of questions - the likelihood is they're really a salesperson. If they're pushing towards a particular product before learning about your history and whether you have any commercial experience, then it's definitely the case. Often, the training inception point for a student with a little experience is largely dissimilar to someone without. Commencing with a basic PC skills course first may be the ideal way to get up and running on your computer program, but depends on your skill level.

Please understand this most important point: You absolutely must have proper 24x7 professional support from mentors and instructors. You will have so many problems later if you don't follow this rule rigidly. You'll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and so-called telephone support is normally just routed to a call-centre who will chat nicely with you for 5 minutes to ask what the issue is and then simply send an email to an instructor - who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you're there), at a time suitable for them. This is all next to useless if you're lost and confused and have a one hour time-slot in which to study.

The very best training providers incorporate three or four individual support centres from around the world. An online system provides an interactive interface to link them all seamlessly, at any time you choose, there is always help at hand, without any problems or delays. Never compromise where support is concerned. The majority of students that can't get going properly, would have had a different experience if they'd got the right support package in the first place.

Many trainers provide piles of reference manuals and workbooks. Learning like this is dull and repetitive and isn't the best way to go about remembering. Studies in learning psychology have shown that we remember much more when we use all our senses, and we put into practice what we've been studying.

Interactive full motion video with demonstrations and practice sessions will forever turn you away from traditional book study. And they're far more fun. Be sure to get a look at some courseware examples from the school that you're considering. The package should contain demo's from instructors, slideshows and interactive labs where you get to practice.

You'll find that many companies will only provide just online versions of their training packages; while you can get away with this much of the time, consider how you'll deal with it if internet access is lost or you get slow speeds and down-time etc. It's much safer to rely on physical CD or DVD discs which will solve that problem.

A lot of training schools are still maintaining a now out-dated method of training - classroom attendance. Very often portrayed as a huge benefit, following a chat with most students who've had to attend a couple, you'll find them listing some or all of these:

* Multiple round journeys - normally hundreds of miles each and every time.

* Asking for time off work - most schools will only provide availability during weekdays and link several days together. This can be hard for a lot of working people, especially when you add the travel time on.

* And don't ignore the lost holiday days. Most of us have 20 days holiday per year. If over 50 percent is used in classes, then we haven't got much left for ourselves.

* 'In-Centre' workshop days normally end up far too big.

* Some trainees are trying to maintain a quick pace, while others are looking to take a more 'steady' pace and not be forced to adopt an uncomfortable speed for them. This generates tension and bad atmosphere on many workshops.

* Let's not disregard the increased expense of driving or bed and breakfast for the night either. Often, this will cost hundreds and even thousands of pounds extra. Do the maths yourself - you'll be (unpleasantly) surprised.

* Many students want to keep their training private and therefore avoiding all management questions in their job.

* It's really not that uncommon for students to not ask questions they want answered - simply because they're with their peers.

* There are those of us who occasionally work or live away part of the time, consider the added problems of reaching the necessary workshops, as time becomes even more scarce.

It obviously makes more sense to study at your convenience - not your training provider's - and utilise instructor-led videos with interactive lab's. Consider... Using a laptop then you could work wherever you happen to be at that time. And live 24x7 support is only a web-click away at times of difficulty. You'll never have to write notes again - all the lessons are prepared and laid out for you - ready to go. Anything you want to do over, you've got it all. Could it be more straightforward: A lot of money is saved and you avoid all the travelling; and of course you get a more stress-free study atmosphere.

Being a part of progressive developments in new technology is about as exciting as it can get. Your actions are instrumental in defining the world to come. Many people are of the opinion that the technological revolution we've been going through is cooling down. Nothing could be further from the truth. Terrific advances are ahead of us, and the internet in particular is going to dominate how we conduct our lives.

If earning a good living is way up on your goal sheet, you will appreciate the fact that the regular income of a typical IT worker is much greater than with other market sectors. With the IT marketplace emerging at an unprecedented rate, it's likely that demand for well trained and qualified IT technicians will continue to boom for a good while yet.
