Kayaking is an ever popular experience for adventure sports enthusiasts. Previously, kayaking was a singles endeavor, one person per boat. Now, pairs and even families can take advantage of tandem kayaks. Together, you can travel gorgeous oceans, still fresh-water lakes, roaring rapids or hidden tributaries in a tandem kayak.
A tandem kayak is also referred to as a double obviously because it can accommodate two people. This style of kayak is perfect for beginners that are reluctant about going it alone on the water. Grab a buddy and travel together in a tandem kayak.
The only rules you should follow are self imposed. Experienced boaters bring kids, friends and even pets along for the ride in a tandem kayak. A great thing about doubles is that the second passenger doesn't actually have to do any paddling. If they are inexperienced, disinclined or incapable of paddling, that's fine. They can simply enjoy the scenery and the luxury of being on the water.
A tandem kayak is wider than the single standard single style. This actually makes a tandem kayak more stable in the water giving your passenger a sense of security.
Tandem kayaking is a good opportunity for families. Very young children can always be seated in Mom or Dad's lap, or if old enough, the kids can be seated between parents where you can keep tabs on them, ensuring a safe trip.
Probably the biggest question while kayaking in tandem is "Who sits where?" Seating arrangements are important for a smooth and easy trek.
The weight and the size of the individuals in your party need to be taken into account when deciding who sits where. Try to keep the weights in each kayak equivalent which means including the weight of the paddles themselves. And keep in mind the the heaviest weight needs to be in the rear of the kayak and the most experienced paddler should take a rear seat as well.
The two people sitting in a tandem kayak should try to work as team. If the second person has not just come along for the ride and both are paddling, the tandem kayak will be much quicker. When paddling is done in unison, kayaking can be efficient. It's the quickest way of kayaking as long as there isn't too much clashing of paddles.
Try kayaking in tandem with your family and keep in mind that teamwork is the main ingredient for success.
